The training was hosted by Old Fort Vol. Fire Dept. and was attended by members of the Green Springs Vol. Fire Dept. and members of the Ballville Twp. Vol. Fire Dept. as well as Old Fort FD members. Photos were taken by, and donated to us by Mike Humphrey. Mike is an Associate Honorary member of the Green Springs Vol. Fire Dept.. Training consisted of interior fire attack techniques, and safety issues and practices during such exercises. Pumper relay operations were also taught and practiced, as well as work with a thermal imaging camera. The interior fire attack portion of the training was instructed by Chief Doug Crowell of Ballville Twp. FD with the assistance of other officers and firefighters in attendance. Covered were entry, hose advancement, and water application techniques. An accountability system was used for all activities during the training. A rehab area was set up for rest and rehab of firefighters when they completed an evolution. A Seneca County EMS unit stood by on scene at the rehab area during the training as a precautionary measure. A pumping relay operation was set up and offered an opportunity for participants to learn about the practice of relay pumping. Green Springs Engine 7 was positioned at the river to draft. Eng. 7 relayed water from the river to two Old Fort Engines. The main engine used for the training was fed by a 500' lay of 4" LDH, while the back-up Engine was fed by a 500' lay of 2 1/2" hose. There was also a lift of approximately 20' from the source/drafting engine to the engines being used for the attack lines. A portable tank was set up at the main attack engine as well in case of a problem with the relay operation or other unforeseen problem that might arise. A Bullard Thermal Imager was used at the training. It was provided as a demo from Finley Fire Equipment Co.. The unit was equipped with a transmitter. Several of the interior evolution's were taped via the transmitter to a TV/VCR in the Green Springs rescue van. It was found to be a very useful tool after the training to critique different practices used in the training exercises. In a room of pitch darkness due to heavy smoke and the like, the imager screen displayed as if it were a lighted, smoke free room. The imager can make advancement into a pitch dark area much quicker, as you can see obstructions and possible dangers. The transmitter option was extremely helpful in follow-up training with the firefighters after the exercise.
