Photos below story. On June 20th, 1999, (Fathers Day) at 8PM, Green Springs Volunteer firefighters were dispatched to a call of a structure fire in the Green Springs Laundromat, which is located on the east side of the downtown business district. First on-scene, GS Engine 10, with Chief Greg Lowe in command, reported heavy smoke venting from the front of the building. Mutual aid from neighboring Clyde FD was requested immediately for their aerial-tower, and Old Fort FD for an engine, a tanker, and manpower. Water supply was established quickly from a hydrant and a 1 3/4" hose line was stretched to the rear door of the building and a positive pressure fan was placed at the front door. With the seat of the fire appearing to be at the rear of the building, an aggressive interior attack was started from the front door. In conjunction with this effort a search was also under way at neighboring business', to the north, for fire and or smoke extension. The only thing reported was some smoke in the basement of the neighboring building, which after a thorough inspection, it was determined to have been pushed over from the fire building through a common crawl space, and no fire extension could be found. The basement was ventilated with no smoke dammage to the property. Neighboring business' to the south, which were seperated by a 15' wide alley were not threatened by the fire, but were monitored throughout the incident. Upon arrival of Clyde FD's aerial-tower it was positioned in front of the fire building and slightly to the north, to prepare for defensive operations should the fire gain access to the buildings to the north. The unit, thankfully, was not needed for this purpose, but was utilized to do some ventilation on the front of the two-story building during overhaul. Ventilation of the roof was finally completed after alot of hard work overcomming obstacles such as, double ceilings, metal roofing and no stairs to the second story. The partial stairway was eventually found and accessed by ladder from inside the building. The staircase, to the vacant upstairs which had been an apartment in the past, had been removed from the first floor to the ceiling of the first floor and the openings covered up during a remodeling at some point. Firefighters had the fire under control within 20 minutes and extinguished within an hour. Firefighters were clear of the scene around 11:00 pm., at which time it was still under investigation by the Sandusky County Fire Investigation Unit and the State Fire Marshalls Office. The fire was later determined to be arson. There were several firefighters treated for exhaustion at the scene by Green Springs EMS crews and one for a minor burn to the wrist. The Seneca County Red Cross, Green Springs Police Department, Green Springs EMS, Clyde FD, and Old Fort FD all assisted at the scene. kjh
