Install fire extinguishers throughout your home, especially in the kitchen. Make sure that they are accessible and everyone in your family knows where they are at, and how to use them properly.
Plan 2 ways out of each room. The first way is probably the door and the second way out might be a window. If you plan for a child or a senior to exit a window, make sure they can open it easily. If you can't get out, close your door, go to the window and signal for help. Teach children never to hide under beds or in closets. If you must go through smoke, crawl low. The coolest, cleanest air will be within 18 inches off the floor. Have a meeting place outside where everyone will meet. Be able to tell the fire department if everyone is out safely. This will protect you and the firefighters. Get out and STAY OUT! Don't go back into a burning building for anything or anyone! Let the fire department do their job. Telephone the fire department from a neighbor's house, or use a fire
alarm emergency box to notify them of the fire. Wear tight fitting sleeves, or sleeveless shirts when cooking. Loose sleeves easily catch fire. Never move a burning pan. You can too easily ignite your clothes or
spill the fire onto someone or somethng else. Use large ashtrays with center rests so cigarettes fall into the ashtray and not on the floor. Empty ashtrays into coffee cans of other metal containers. Try to quit. Keep all matches and lighters out of reach and sight of children. A high, lock cabinet is recommended. Teach children that matches and lighters are not toys, they are tools for grown-ups. Teach children to tell a grown-up when they see matches or lighters lying around. Never give a lighter to a child as a toy. Auto Safety
Always yield the right-of-way to emergency vehicles. When it is safely possible, pull off to the side of the road and wait untill the emergency vehicles have passed, whether they are traveling in the same, or in the opposite direction that you are.
Always wear your seatbelt. Be aware of safety notices and warnings concerning air bags and children, check your vehicle manufacturers manual for such warnings.
Don't drink and drive. Never ride with someone who is under the influence of alcohol or other controlled substances. Don't let friends drive while under the influence. Obey traffic laws. Don't speed Keep your vehicle well maintained. Pay attention to your surroundings. Don't be distracted by the use of a cell phone, etc... In cold weather winter areas, be sure to keep a blanket, a candle & matches, and some non-parishable food in your vehicle in case you get stranded. Other usefull items: jumper cables, flashlight, spare tire, etc... Boating Safety
Always wear your life jacket. Always have enough life jackets on the boat for everyone. Make sure that your life jackets are Coastguard approved.
Know and obey the laws for the waterways you are navigating. Make sure you have an accurate compass to navigate by. Have a ship to shore marine radio if possible. At least have a weather band radio on-board. Make sure you have all of the Coastguard required emergency equipment on-board. These pages always under construction. Check back again.
